Carrington College® California Pomona Hosts “Paw it Forward” on Feb. 15

POMONA, Calif. – (Jan. 18, 2011) – Carrington College® California Pomona will host Paw it Forward on Feb. 15 offering complimentary veterinary and spa services to pamper dogs and cats in honor of pet dental health awareness month in February. Services will include teeth brushing, ear cleaning, nail trimming, grooming and flea application. Veterinary technology program director, faculty, and students will be on-hand to share tips with owners on proper dental care including how to brush to combat plaque and tartar buildup.

“With pet dental awareness month right around the corner, Carrington wants to make sure that pets are pampered and owners understand the importance of routine veterinary check-ups,” said Rebecca Appell, executive director of Carrington College California Pomona. “Most people have no idea that dental health is crucial to their pets’ overall health so we are educating owners on how to properly care for their animals for a long and prosperous life.”

The event is free and open to the public with local area animal shelters and pet supply stores being invited to attend Paw it Forward. All pets must be leashed or kenneled. Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod will host Commissioner Catherine JK Sandoval of the California Public Utilities Commission at a public roundtable meeting for an informal discussion with Inland Empire residents over regulatory issues and concerns facing the community.

The CPUC is responsible for enforcing laws created by the legislature pertaining to electrical utilities and telecommunications companies, among other areas. Last year State Senator Gloria Negrete McLedo authored Senate Bill 32 to implement a feed-in tariff program which requires utility companies to pay for the excess electricity generated by residential and business rooftop solar arrays. Programs like Senator Negrete Mcleod's SB 32 help spur jobs and shift our dependence away from traditional pollution-generating power plants.

Commissioner Sandoval is the newest of the five-member CPUC and the first Latina on the commission. She was recently appointed by Governor Brown at the beginning of this year and her term expires after 6 years.

The commission regulates privately owned electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water, railroad, rail transit, and passenger transportation companies.

The CPUC has a 100 year history in California and serves the public interest by protecting consumers and ensuring the provision of safe, reliable utility services and infrastructure at reasonable rates, with a commitment to environmental enhancement and a healthy California economy.

1,491,123 people walked through our gates this year and we thank you all for helping us to make the 2011 Annual L.A. County Fair one of the best on record. This year's attendance marked the second highest attended Fair in our 89-year history.

In keeping with our mission, we worked to make sure every single guest had a hand in giving back to the community.

Guests donated a total of 99,268 cans of non-perishable food to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank on Ralphs Food Drive Fridays.
The Fair commemorated the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 and donated more than $7,500 to USA Cares.
The American Red Cross, City of Hope and Cedars-Sinai held blood drives resulting in 427 pints of blood donated.
Guests donated a total of 38,463 new and gently-used books to local schools and libraries on Book Drive Thursdays.
Thanks to McDonald's Wednesdays, $1 for every ticket was given to Ronald McDonald House, totaling more than $38,000.
137,413 students and teachers experienced the Fair's educational exhibits through the FairKids Field Trip program
The Fair honored 18 communities and 35 community heroes on their dedicated days.
Local universities also benefitted from special promotions and dedicated days on eight College Days.

Thank you, again. Without your support we would not be able to call ourselves the largest county fair in the nation. See you next year, Sept. 1-30, 2012!

Vector Control Agencies Partner on Neighborhood Asian Tiger Mosquito Control & Education Campaign

WHO: The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District and the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District

WHAT: Local public health agencies will collaborate and conduct simultaneous neighborhood outreach and control campaigns in the San Gabriel Valley to raise awareness, provide immediate, localized mosquito control, and evaluate the extent of the infestation of the aggressive day time biting Asian tiger mosquito. Results from this survey will be used to develop future control strategies.

WHEN: the door to door and neighborhood inspections will begin Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 9am. Residents are asked to cooperate and provide agency inspectors access to property.

WHERE: The greater LA County Vector Control District will be surveying a 1.5 mile stretch of area along the 60fwy from Santa Anita Ave. to north of the San Gabriel River.

The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District will be surveying the region north nad east from the infestation area towards the foothills. Spot inspections will take place in an approximate 20 square mile grid north of th 10 fwy and 2 miles on each side of the 605 fwy.

In its continued efforts to educate the community about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Casa Colina is pleased to host a free community seminar on Wednesday, September 14th.
Topics of discussion include what causes COPD and who is affected; how people are diagnosed with this chronic illness; how a medical doctor treats COPD; the role of pulmonary rehab and therapy to complement medical care; and demonstrating simple "at home" exercises and other ways to improve the quality of living with COPD.

Since Sept 2010, increasing number of visitors and customers are coming to Downtown Pomona. As a result, VPD parking lots are filling quickly, especially on the weekends, both day and night. In order to meet the challenge of providing parking to the VPD District and the patrons of Pomona, parking system upgrades are needed at this time. These improvements can be funded by a parking fee increase, which has also been recommended by previously conducted parking study and fee analysis.

Pomona Community Development Loan Program Workshop

This will be Ampac's first loan workshop in The City of
Pomona. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011.
Registration and The continental breakfast begins at 8:30 am and the
workshop portion will be from 9:00am - 11:00am. The workshop will be held
at The Pomona Worksource Center, where the Pomona Urban League is based.

The Workshop will cover how businesses can access Fixed Asset and Working
Capital for their business with the New Pomona Loan Program, will give a
better understanding of Ampac, SBA Loans and how it all works together.

The event is being Co-Hosted by The City of Pomona, The Pomona Chamber of
Commerce and The Urban League - Pomona, CA.
